WFB Fight in Ranks Question

Anticipating the release next year of the revised Beasts of Chaos book (being written by Any Hoare, who wrote Cities of Death, Planetfall, Lizarmen, Tau Empire, etc.), I'm diggining out a Beast Herd or two.

I could use some help interpreting how Ungors and Gors fight together. Can Ungor fight if the unit size and model placement puts the Ungors in the unit in a "subsequent" rank, say the third?

The rule for fighting in ranks WFB (55) isn't much help, really. Spears fight in 2 ranks in defence (right), but the second paragraph of the rule says "or subsequent ranks."

Next, if Ungors settle in the rear ranks, but are the first models removed in close combat, then what possible use are they? Bubblewrap . . . can you hear me Beastboy?

This seems broken from the start, but I'm probably missing something. No doubt the unit and its ambiguous nature will change in the revivion.

I appreciate any input the group may have to share.

  1. Ungor can fight if put in the second or third row because they have spears --that's pretty clear. One other thing to remember is this: the mixed unit (Gors/ungors) is a skirmishing unit, so they will rank up according to the width of the opposing unit and whatever's left goes onto the second and subsequent rows. The use of the ungors, as far as I can remember, is to soak up as much damage as possible (with casualties) and let the more powerful and effective Gors counter-attack. I don't have the rulebook in front of me, but I think that's how we played them in our games.

  2. Thanks Bubblewrap. My uncertainty about multiple ranks is realizing that, under most circumstances, multiple ranks means two. When there is an exception, as is the case with HE, the language is specific. And the rule as written refers to a second rank fighting behind friendly troops engaged in close combat. However, The Beasts of Chaos exception is implicit. But what if more than three ranks involved in a combat? And Beastmen can still only form up 4 files.

And I misspoke in the original posting. Ungors are the models lost to ranged weaponry, but once engaged, the Gors (being the models up front) take the losses as normal.
