IMS's 40K update and AAR with Southpaw's Marines

This is the growing project that is tentatively known as Daemonhunters.  I write "tentatively" because, as I tend to prefer, this army can use pieces of other armies (specifically Guard and Space Marines), and so I find myself painting for this army while planning two others when/if I get enough models for them.

These are the Space Marines that will be helping my inquisitor when he roots out corrupted filth, such as one might find in rcar's army or in Southpaw's (the only difference between these two is rcar's admission of the corruption of his forces).  The Daemon Hunters either take Grey Knights or Space Marines, so these fellers didn't get fielded against Southpaw (we need army names).  The scheme is a simple black with gray for highlighting.  Commanders have a red helmet.

The Inquisitor is accompanied by Henchmen who give bonuses to his statline and do a bit of fighting.  They are more or less a "characterful" bunch who don't seem to survive first contact with the enemy.  Southpaw incinerated these just as the Inquisitor was closing to engage with the Dreadnaught.

Death Cult Assassins.  Yessir.  Good rolling on my part and terrible rolling on Southpaw's allowed these badasses to route a unit of terminators right off of the table.  They probably shouldn't have done quite that well, but you can't find much fault with four S4 attacks each on the charge with power weapons...

I was also very lucky with these Inquisitorial Stormtroopers (converted from Catachans, Bretonnians, and other bits - conversion kind of works, I think).  The first round the grenade launcher (below in back rank) managed to hit a Terminator through a doorway and kill it.  Of course this made Southpaw cross, and he destroyed them before they could do much more, but I like to think that their sacrifice allowed the Grey Knights to close.

The sergeant worked out well, I think, but in general I am thinking that the unit should either be designed to stand off an shoot or to close.  For this reason, I painted a few extra models so that Flamers and sergeants could be traded out for more Hellguns (beefed up Lasguns).

Combat Servitor who can be part of the Inquisitor's Henchman gorup.  Haven't seen this feller in combat, but he is armed with a powerfist, and I remain unconvinced that such weapons will survive long enough to be used.

Grey Knights.  I really like these models, but I almost think that maxing out on Terminators might be better.  The reason for this is that the don't cost all that much more, and Terminator weapons count as power weapons (so no saves).  Nevertheless, these two units of five closed with Southpaw on the left flank and managed to do very well once they closed.  I didn't guess how powerful they would be with assault 2, 24" range weapons that can be combined with the hand weapon, which gives a +2 Str!

And now the Terminators, led my my General, who has just finished killing one of rcar's chaos marines (see detail below).

I modelled the Space marine Torso out of bits that I had, and got guts from a fantasy Zombie sprue.  It is a bit fuzzy, but the raven sitting on the horn of the dead CSmarine also came from a fantasy sprue.

I tried to make it look like he had been shot up before being cloven in two, so the attempt was to make gunshot wounds on chest in in his left eye.

The Raven is a bit more visible here.  The banner reads "Emundo," which means roughly "I eradicate impurity," or in short, "I cleanse."

  1. Ah, the good ol' felt matt! Nice job on the Termies, although the Bretto-troopers are so you!

  2. Faboo pics dude. And, very generous AAR. What he fails to include is that his army whupped my Space Marines pretty good. I had a bad run of dice luck but not enough to account for the drubbing I took. Those death-cult assassins are particularly tough in that they are units of 1 (which come to think of it, was that within Army composition rules, IMS?) and with 40k unit rules, it made killing them all the tougher. They also had multiple wounds, didn't they?

  3. They do have more than one wound, and they are like a couple of the unit choices for the Daemon Hunters - units of one that come in groups of 1-3. The deathcult assassins are individual models, but up to three of them count as a single Elite choice. The Daemonhosts are the same, (and I have some on the table).

  4. Oh that's right. I did ask about it during the game. Three units one choice -- what was Sherwood's banner's name again? ;)

  5. Ilan,
Back from La. yesterday. Just got your messages--
great pics of SM's, retinoors and the Grey Knight captain is right on. If you painted his CM victim in dark green he would be a ringer for one of Rob's alignmnet-conflicted (confused, challenged, etc.) marines. They remain an enigma as does the man hiem himself.

  6. Ilan,
I'm dubious of the Stretch Armstrong IG. Tiny Bretonnian--huge Predetor arms. Hmmn . . . can you detach the weapon arms?
